Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of arthritis that mainly affects the spine, but it may also affect other joints. It causes inflammation of the vertebrae, resulting in severe, chronic pain. Ankylosis, or new bone development in the spine, may occur in more advanced cases, causing parts of the spine to fuse in a fixed, immobile position.
